How it works, step by step
What to expect
- Step 1
Examination and clean
Whitening only works on healthy teeth and gums, so we check for decay, leaking fillings and gum inflammation first.
- Step 2
Shade record and plan
We photograph the starting shade and tell you honestly how many shades are realistic for your teeth.
- Step 3
Whitening
A clinic session, home trays for ten to fourteen nights, or both depending on the plan we agreed.
- Step 4
Review and matching
Any front fillings, crowns or bonding are re-matched to the new shade two weeks after whitening finishes.
Making the result last
- Avoid deeply coloured food and drink for 48 hours after each whitening session.
- Use a sensitivity toothpaste for a week if your teeth feel twingy, this settles quickly.
- Drink coffee and tea through the day with water afterwards rather than sipping constantly.
- Top up for one or two nights every six to twelve months using your trays.
Frequently asked questions
- How many shades will my teeth improve?
- Most patients see between two and six shades. Yellow-toned teeth respond best; grey tones, tetracycline staining and single dark teeth respond less predictably, and we tell you before you start.
- Will whitening change my crowns or fillings?
- No. Ceramic and composite do not whiten. If they are visible when you smile, they may need replacing after whitening to match the new shade, we plan for this in advance.
- Is whitening safe for enamel?
- Dentist-supervised whitening with regulated gels does not damage enamel. Temporary sensitivity is the common side effect and settles within days.
