Why patients ask about implant brands
When you compare dental implants abroad, brand names appear quickly: Straumann, MegaGen, Nobel Biocare, Osstem. It is a sensible question to ask, because the implant stays in your jaw for decades and any future repair depends on getting the right parts. This guide explains how the two systems we are asked about most actually differ, and what matters more than the name on the box.

Straumann: the long-term evidence
Straumann has been making implants since the 1970s and is one of the most studied systems in dentistry. Its surfaces are designed to encourage the bone to bond quickly, and it offers a titanium and zirconium alloy for narrow implants where space is tight.
We usually reach for Straumann when a case is demanding: grafted bone, a sinus lift, a front tooth where the gum line must stay stable, or a full-arch bridge on four or six implants. In those situations the depth of published follow-up is a real advantage.
MegaGen: grip in softer bone
MegaGen is a South Korean system that has grown quickly in Europe. Its best known design uses a deep, tapered thread that holds firmly as it is placed. That initial grip, called primary stability, matters most in soft bone, such as the upper back jaw, and when a temporary tooth is fitted soon after surgery.
It is a modern, well-engineered system rather than a budget one, and its components are widely available, so a dentist in the UK, Italy or Spain can service it later.

What matters more than the brand
A premium implant placed in the wrong position will do worse than a good implant placed well. Before choosing a system we look at:
- Your bone. A 3D scan shows its height, width and density. Thin bone may need grafting or a sinus lift first.

Why the brand goes in writing
Every patient leaves with an implant card listing the brand, model, diameter, length and batch number of each implant. If you ever need a new crown or a screw tightened at home, your dentist knows exactly which parts to order. Be cautious of any clinic that cannot tell you which system you received.
