The short answer

The first visit should happen around the first birthday or when the first teeth appear, and it is mostly a friendly look and advice. Fluoride varnish and fissure sealants prevent most childhood decay, and the habits set before age six matter more than any treatment.

Key takeaways

  • First visit around the first birthday, before anything hurts.
  • Fluoride varnish and sealants prevent most childhood decay.
  • Snack frequency matters more than quantity.
  • Baby teeth need treating; they hold space for adult teeth.

Introduction

Children who meet a dentist before anything hurts grow into adults who are not afraid of one. That is most of what early visits are for.

TLDR;

  • First visit at around twelve months, or when the first teeth appear.
  • Early visits are short, friendly and mostly counting teeth.
  • Fluoride varnish twice a year measurably reduces decay.
  • Fissure sealants protect the grooves of new adult molars.
  • Brushing with a fluoride paste twice a day, supervised until about eight.

Preparing a nervous child

Keep the language neutral at home. No promises that nothing will happen, and no words like needle, drill or pain, even to reassure. Book a morning appointment, bring a favourite toy, and let the child sit in the chair with nothing being done on the first visit if that is what they need.

What prevention actually looks like

Fluoride varnish is painted on in seconds and repeated every six months. Sealants are a thin resin flowed into the deep grooves of the six-year molars, no drilling, no anaesthetic. Between them they prevent the majority of fillings we would otherwise be doing at age ten.

Diet, honestly

Frequency matters more than quantity. A sweet eaten in five minutes is far less damaging than the same sweet nibbled across an hour, and juice or sweetened milk in a bedtime bottle is the single most damaging habit we see.

Baby teeth still matter

They hold space for the adult teeth and an abscess in one can damage the permanent tooth forming underneath. Treating them is not optional simply because they will fall out.

What we do at Dental Oasis

Appointments are unhurried, in Albanian or English, and parents stay in the room. If your family is visiting Tirana, children can be seen alongside adult treatment.

Frequently asked questions

When should the first visit be?

Are dental x-rays safe for children?
Digital x-rays use a very low dose and are only taken when there is a clinical reason, with protection in place.
Can children be treated while we visit Tirana?
Yes. Check-ups, fluoride, sealants and simple fillings are all straightforward to schedule alongside adult appointments.
What does a children''s appointment cost?
Albanian dental guidelines do not allow clinics to publish prices online. Ask us on WhatsApp and we reply privately.
