Introduction
In August 2026 the BBC ran a report headlined "'Tirana teeth': Albania hopes to be the new Turkey for dental work", followed by a video piece on the risks of dental tourism. A new nickname was born, built on an older one. Neither phrase describes a treatment. Both describe a reputation, and reputations are earned one treatment plan at a time.

What people actually mean by Turkey teeth
The phrase came out of fast full-smile cases: twenty units, one week, a stock shape and a shade far brighter than anything natural. In most of those cases the teeth are crowns, not veneers. A crown means the natural tooth is reduced on every side before the ceramic goes on. That is permanent. If the nerve is irritated by the preparation, root canal treatment can follow, and every crown eventually needs replacing.
None of that is caused by Turkey as a country. Turkey has excellent clinicians. It is caused by a business model that sells a finished smile in a week to someone who has not yet been examined.
What Tirana teeth is turning into
Albania is now on the same trajectory, which is exactly why the phrase matters. Tirana is roughly three hours from London, the clinics are new, and the sector is growing fast. Growing fast is how a country ends up with a nickname it cannot shake.
A properly planned case in Tirana looks nothing like the pattern above. It starts with an examination, x-rays and, where implants are involved, a 3D CBCT scan. The plan is written down before you book a flight. Veneers stay veneers where the tooth is healthy, with preparation under a millimetre of enamel, and in selected cases none at all. Shape, length and shade are designed digitally and tried in your mouth before anything is cemented.

Full-arch patients leave the first trip with a fixed temporary bridge, so nobody flies home without teeth.
Anyone offering a full smile plus implants finished in one short visit is compressing biology, not being efficient.
